The music room (BLT spot) became the second heartbeat of the house, after the kitchen, and reflected how we lived. She also created a media room when she winterized a solarium next to the living room. My mother was ahead of her time when she built a fifty-foot-long, eight-foot-wide, five-foot-deep, chlorine-free, indoor lap pool and painted the enormous white satellite dish green to blend with the trees. ![]() The informal architects, however, were my parents, who each made contributions that changed how we lived. We had the Airwick ready when Hollywood’s cigar smokers came for meetings. My mother often sat at the piano in a corner of the living room ’til dawn, composing songs for my father’s movies and stage appearances, like the Oscar-nominated Five Pennies, and penning those wildly intelligent and fast-paced gems so associated with my father. My parents preferred to entertain at home, and over the years they each developed their own style. My father, as he liked to say, would “flake out” on the couch for days at a time, watching talk shows, Julia Child and the Dodgers, and eating black licorice and BLTs. But for more than four decades “the house,” as we always called it, was an anchor, a place where we could retreat and get grounded in our own way. ![]() I finally sold it in 1992 after they had both died, and my life was elsewhere. My parents rented the house in 1949 and bought it a year later from the director Lewis Milestone, whose well- known films included Mutiny on the Bounty and Of Mice and Men. ![]()

To reiterate, imperfect verbs in Spanish tense, on the other hand, describes past events that occurred in a habitual, repetitive, or routine manner. This event usually happened only once, and then ended. We use the preterite tense in Spanish to describe an isolated event that occurred in the past. What’s the difference between the imperfect and the preterite past tense? Ready for some practice? Conjugate the following in the imperfect tense: Let’s review the following charts of key imperfect conjugation Spanish: This conjugation has the same rules as -er verbs. – If you are referring to ellos or ‘they,’ use the ending – ían, to form comían. – If you are referring to nosotros or ‘we,’ use the ending – íamos, to form comíamos. (Yes, this is the same as the Yo form as well!) – If you are referring to él or ella or ‘he’ or ‘she,’ use the ending – ía, to form comía. – If you are referring to tú or ‘you,’ use the ending – ías, to form comías. – Yo uses the ending ía, (instead of – aba) to form comía. What about -er verbs? Let’s use comer (to eat) again, for example: How to Conjugate -er Verbs in the Imperfect Tense: – If you are referring to ellos or ‘they,’ use the ending – aban, to form miraban. – If you are referring to nosotros or ‘we,’ use the ending – ábamos to form mirábamos. ![]() – If you are referring to él or ella or ‘he’ or ‘she,’ use the ending – aba to form miraba. – If you are referring to t ú or ‘you,’ use the ending – abas, to form mirabas. – If you are referring to y o or ‘I,’ add the ending – aba to end the conjugated verb, forming miraba. All we need to do now is learn a new formula for Spanish imperfect conjugations.Īs we have already used the example of the verb mirar (to watch) in Spanish, let’s continue to stick with the same example: How to Conjugate -ar Verbs in the Imperfect Tense: By now you have probably realized how it works. ![]() Identical to the past tense, the Spanish imperfect tense also breaks down verbs into five different ending variants. Whereas the past tense refers to a one-time isolated event of the past, the imperfect tense describes past events that occurred in a habitual, repetitive, or routine manner. This post is about learning how to conjugate the imperfect tense Spanish, when to use it, and how it differs from the past tense. Learn how to handle them and improve your Spanish grammar knowledge in this post by Fairfax, CA tutor Jason N.Īs you probably already know, conjugation is crucial to learning Spanish! As we get to this fourth post in my conjugation series, you may be pleasantly surprised when you realize that it’s all about mastering patterns and formulas!īy now, you have come a long way you know about conjugating basic Spanish verbs in present tense, stem-changing verbs in present tense, irregular verb conjugations in their yo form, and how to conjugate Spanish verbs in the preterite (past) tense. The only way to know the difference is to look at the context of the sentence in which they are being used.As you learn Spanish, the imperfect Spanish conjugation is bound to come up. NOTE: The yo and él/ella/usted forms are the same for each of these verbs. Let’s look at these irregular Imperfect Tense verbs’ conjugation charts below: These could also sound like “was going”, “was being”, “was watching” if they are used as a continuous action that was interrupted in the past tense. That means that these verbs sound something like “used to go”, “used to be”, “used to watch” in the Imperfect Tense. Remember that in the Imperfect Tense we are talking about actions that have been repeated “over and over” in the past tense. In the Imperfect Tense in Spanish we only have three irregular verbs. Remember how there were a lot of irregular verbs and rules to verbs in the Preterit Tense? Well, you’re going to love the irregular verbs in the Imperfect Tense because there are only THREE! Woohoo! Let’s check them out… ![]() ![]() By default, FontLab exports fonts with a Unicode encoding.Work with blazing speed with even most complex contours thanks to FontLab’s optimized architecture.Ĭustomize FontLab’s interface to your needs, and easily navigate it with the intuitive Quick Help system: hover and hold F1. The old encodings are mostly useful as a way of viewing a specific glyphset rather than for mapping of codes. Apple, Microsoft and most other companies have recognized Unicode encodings for many years now. Most of this confusion is somewhat reduced by using Unicode as a standard, all-encompassing encoding. On the Macintosh, the Scaron is only available in the MacOS Central European codepage, under the code 225! The confusion becomes evident if you realize that the same code (138) in the Windows Western codepage is used to represent the Š (Scaron) that… does not have its own codepoint at all in MacOS Roman. For example: the letter ä (adieresis) is represented by the character code 228 in the Windows Western (WinANSI, 1252) codepage used by Microsoft, and with the character code 138 in the MacOS Roman codepage used by Apple. In addition, different companies assign character codes differently. This is why separate codepages were created for Western European languages (English, German, French etc.), Central and Eastern European languages (Polish, Czech, Hungarian etc.), Baltic languages (Latvian, Lithuanian, Estonian etc.) and so on. So for example it is not possible to encode Latin and Cyrillic text using a single codepage.Ģ56 character codes are not even sufficient to encode various accented (diacritic) characters from different languages that use the Roman alphabet. With only 256 slots (available codepoints), usually only characters from one alphabet (writing system) can be encoded. The biggest problem of single-byte encoding standards, such as the old Mac and Windows codepages, is their limited capacity. Multi-byte mapping standards use from one to four bytes for every character - expanding the code space to billions of characters. This means that only 256 different characters can be encoded in a single one-byte encoding standard.Ī double-byte encoding uses two bytes (16 bits) for every character, so it’s possible to map 65,536 characters. With a one-byte encoding, each character in the text is encoded using exactly one byte (8 bits of information). There are one-byte, double-byte and multi-byte encoding standards. ![]() One major difference between the encoding standards (besides the assignment of codes) is the size of the code. There are many other character encoding standards (sometimes called codepages) used in the world to help use different languages. When the computer needs to show some text on screen or print it, it accesses a font and turns the character codes into visual shapes.Ī character encoding standard is a table that defines the relation between characters and the codes that are used to represent these characters in the computer. When you enter text into a computer, the computer turns the keystrokes that you press on the keyboard into integers and assigns a number (character code) to each character that you enter. ![]() Simply speaking, text in digital form is a collection of character codes (or “codepoints”) - integer numbers. In addition to storing each glyph, a font has some header information that stores general information about the font such as the family name, the style name, the copyright string, the ascender and descender values, and others. See Language Support and Glyphs for more details of selecting characters for your font. See the About Glyphs article for more details. In the following sections you will find more information about encoding modes, Unicode and name-based identification and the character-glyph model. In FontLab, you can choose the Encodings menu (in the top part of the Font Window) to display a subset of the glyph collection. Also, different/older font formats use different methods to encode characters. On an average screen the Font Window can show just a few hundred character cells, so we need to have some method to browse the font “through” the Font Window. ![]() Viewing a font by many different character indexing methods and groupings is a key FontLab VI feature.Ī font is mostly a big collection of glyphs that are used to represent many characters. The cable itself is also thin and flexible, making it easy to coil up and stow in a bag or pocket. The plastic housings felt pleasantly rounded and comfortable to grasp while we were plugging and unplugging, and they seemed firmly attached to the body. The Boost Charge cable isn’t as capable as most of our other picks, but we confirmed in our testing that it can charge devices at up to 15 W of power, which is the limit for this type of cable. Some of older wall chargers, car chargers, and laptops have only USB-A ports, so having at least one cable like this around can be useful. ![]() Why you might prefer it: The Belkin Boost Charge USB-C to USB-A Cable is your best bet for charging a phone, tablet, or other small USB-C device on a USB-A port. Notably, this cable’s 18-month warranty is the best coverage length we’ve seen in this category, and that should give you plenty of time to test the cable out with your devices and decide whether it works properly for you. The housings attaching the plugs to the main body of the cable aren’t as robust as those of some other Anker cables, but they seem sturdy and roomy enough to let you get a firm grasp. When you use it with non-Thunderbolt USB-C devices, it functions as a USB-C cable that supports 100 W charging and USB 3.1 Gen 2 data-transfer speeds. It’s Thunderbolt 3 capable, so although it looks like any other USB-C–to–USB-C cable (aside from the Thunderbolt logo on each end), it can transfer data up to four times faster (40 Gbps) between supported devices. Rated for 100 W charging, the Anker USB-C Thunderbolt 3 Cable can charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro or any high-powered laptop. Why you might prefer it: This cable could be considered the “professional” pick, likely to be overkill in most homes. Each has different capabilities and limitations in charging power and speed (measured in watts, W) and data-transfer speed between devices (measured in megabits per second, Mbps, or gigabits per second, Gbps). Micro-USB and Mini-USB can provide only regular charging regardless of a USB-A or USB-C connection. Apple’s Lightning ports can use regular 12-watt charging with a USB-A cable and faster charging via USB-C. We’ve tested dozens of cables and adapters to help you find the right ones for your needs without overspending.Ī quick primer on USB specifications for those living in blissful oblivion: While ordinary USB-A ports are limited to just 12 watts of charging power, USB-C ports can provide 18 watts of fast-charging power to phones and, more rarely, up to 240 watts to laptops (depending on the cable and device you plug into them). Unfortunately, when it comes to USB-C, even cables that look identical can behave very differently-for instance, a cable that charges your phone at top speed might be sluggish at transferring music files, or vice versa. Mouser offers inventory, pricing, & datasheets for Male Right Angle RCA Phono Connectors.
